Someone who lives on milk is still an infant and doesn’t know how to do what is right.
Hebrews5:13
When Sara was a little girl, she found the perfect alibi for her every crime. Whether she unrolled a brand-new roll of toilet paper throughout the house or wrote her name in crayon on the wall, Sara’s imaginary friend, Ella, took the blame.
“Sara, who spilled orange juice all over the floor?” her mother would ask.
“Ella did it,” Sara would always reply.
Sara never outgrew her penchant for blaming others. As an adult, whether she bounced a check or showed up late for work, she always found a way to pin her failures on others.
This pattern started in Eden. When Adam ate the fruit, he blamed Eve. Then Eve blamed Satan. When we fail to take responsibility for our choices, we tend to make the same bad ones over and over again. Accepting responsibility for our actions tells God that we want to learn from our mistakes so they don’t happen again. It also tells Him that we are willing to do what it takes to make them right.
Are you using the shortcomings of someone else to justify your own actions? Take a moment to ask God to examine your heart in this important area.
Lord, as hard as it is to admit when I am wrong, teach me to humbly accept responsibility for my choices. I pray for growth and maturity in my Christian walk. Amen.
