Equipment

You'll need a 35cm square cake board and 3 bamboo skewers.

Homemade buttercake

125g butter, softened

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

3/4 cup caster sugar

2 eggs, lightly beaten

1 1/2 cups self-raising flour, sifted

1/2 cup milk

Buttercream icing

125g butter, softened

1 1/2 cups icing sugar mixture

1 tablespoon milk

Decorations

Pink food colouring

3 lolly necklaces

5 lolly bracelets

1/2 x 350g packet jubes

4 pink musk sticks

3 x 6g packets Candy Rolls or Fizzers

Method

Step 1

Preheat oven to 180°C/160°C fan-forced. Grease a 9.6cm-deep, 20cm (base) round loose-based cake pan. Line base and side with baking paper.

Step 2

Make cake: Using an electric mixer, beat butter, vanilla and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating after each addition. Add flour and milk. Stir to combine. Spread into prepared pan. Bake for 1 hour 10 minutes or until a skewer inserted in centre comes out clean. Stand in pan for 5 minutes. Turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 3

Using a serrated knife, cut a 3cm-thick slice from cake top to form lid. Trim 3.5cm from 1 side of lid. Discard. Place cake base on board. Using a small knife, cut a 3cm-deep cone shape from centre, leaving 2cm border around top edge. Discard cone.

Step 4

Make icing: Using an electric mixer, beat butter in a bowl until light and fluffy. Gradually add icing sugar mixture and milk, beating constantly until combined. Place 1/2 cup icing in a bowl. Tint remaining icing pink. Spoon 2 tablespoons plain icing into a piping bag fitted with a 2mm plain nozzle. Spread remaining white icing over underneath of lid. Spread two-thirds pink icing over top and side of cake base. Arrange half the necklaces, bracelets and jubes in box.

Step 5

Cut 1 musk stick crossways in half. Place pieces upright on cake sides to support lid. Push remaining musk sticks, standing up, in the centre of cake. Holding cake lid, iced-side down, in 1 hand, spread remaining pink icing on top and side of lid. Carefully place lid over musk stick pieces. Secure with skewers at back of cake. Arrange Candy Rolls around cake to form a decorative pattern. Pipe small dots around Candy Rolls. Fill box with remaining lollies. Serve.
