Seasons/Availability

Midgen berries are available in the autumn months.

Current Facts

Botanically known as Austromyrtus dulcis, the small berries are also known as the Midyim berry and are in the myrtle family.

Description/Taste

Midgen berries are round, white fruits with blue-gray spots that grow to about 1/4 of an inch in diameter. The small spots give the berries a mauve hue. Midgen berries contain three to nine pale brown, edible seeds. Midgen berries have a pleasant, slight fragrance with a mild, sweet-gingery taste.

Applications

Midgen berries are often consumed raw. After washing, toss whole Midgen berries into fruit salads or add to apple pies for nice flavor contrast. Midgen berries are highly perishable. Native Australians use Midyim berries to make a flavorful jam.

Geography/History

Midgen berries are native to the Eastern Australian coast. Outside of Australia they have can be found growing in central Florida and Southern California in the United States. The Australian berries are considered “bushfood” and are a favorite among local Aboriginal tribes.
