Seasons/Availability
Sunshine raspberries are available in the spring and throughout the summer.
Current Facts
Sunshine raspberries are the newest berry from Driscoll’s. They were trademarked in 2009, but did not find a place in the produce world until more recently. Gold raspberries, botanical name Rubus idaeus, are a bramble fruit of a perennial shrub within the family, Rosaceae along with strawberries and blackberries.
Description/Taste
Sunshine raspberries are a similar size and shape to the more common Red raspberries with some amazing color differences. Sunshine raspberries are a marbled mixture of both orange and red, with a very light tone. The taste is sweeter and less tart than Red raspberries.
Applications
Sunshine raspberries make a colorful contribution to glazed tarts, cheesecakes or cakes. Add them to fruit salads for a fresh burst of color. The sweeter taste is a compliment to strong cheeses and can add additional flavor to a green salad. Sunshine raspberries are very perishable, like other berries and should be consumed within a few days.
Geography/History
Raspberries are native to the Mediterranean area and North America. Sunshine raspberries are a cross between Golden and Red raspberries.
