This is up there with being one of my major life achievements. Yes, having babies and getting married and passing exams are all hugely important in the grand scheme of things. But a Blue Peter badge? Now that’s something I’ll bore on about forever. And here’s the recipe that won it. Beware: this is sickly sweet. I’ve suggested cutting it into 25 small squares but you may want to go smaller. Substitute the biscuits as you wish.
INGREDIENTS
50g butter, plus extra for greasing
350g milk chocolate, broken into pieces
150g oat biscuits or digestives
50g dried apricots, chopped
50g raisins
70g glace cherries, halved
3 nougat and caramel chocolate bars, refrigerated and sliced
METHOD
Grease and line a 20 x 20 cm baking tin with non-stick greaseproof paper. Place the butter and chocolate in a microwaveable bowl and melt in the microwave for short bursts (this should take about 1 minute) or place the bowl over a pan of simmering water, ensuring the bottom of the bowl does not come into contact with the water. Stir until completely melted and smooth and set aside to cool a little.
Place the biscuits in a sealed food bag and bash them with a rolling pin into 2 cm pieces. Tip the broken biscuits, dried fruit and glacé cherries into the melted chocolate mixture and stir well. Add the chocolate bar pieces and stir again until well mixed through. Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and cover with a piece of cling film. Press down to achieve a flat-ish top then chill for 2 hours before cutting into squares and eating in front of Blue Peter.
