A savoury bread and butter style pudding using regular sandwiches instead of slices of buttered bread. This is great for little ones practising their sandwich-making skills. It won’t matter if the knife goes though the bread, in fact it makes for a better bake. Try to resist helping too much – sometimes you need to mangle a few pieces of bread to learn the hard way.
INGREDIENTS
20g butter, softened, plus extra for greasing
4 slices white bread
70g cheese, grated
2 slices ham
250ml semi-skimmed or whole milk
1 large egg
ground black pepper, (optional)
METHOD
Grease a 24 x 14 cm, 4 cm deep ovenproof dish with a little butter. Butter one side of all the bread and make into sandwiches by scattering 2 of the slices with a third of the cheese each and cover with a slice of ham. Place the other two slices on top and squash together a little. Using scissors, cut each sandwich into four triangles, then line up in the dish with the point of the triangle facing upwards.
Use a fork to beat together the milk, egg and a little pepper then pour over the sandwiches to cover. Leave to soak for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 190°C. Sprinkle the remaining cheese over the top and bake for 35 minutes until set and brown. Serve with baked beans for a TV dinner, kid style.
