This boozy mulled apple cider is one of my favourite drinks that I love to make during winter. It sure warms the body up from inside out to beat the chilly weather. The sweet apple cider with cinnamon and nutmeg is such a great combination, which reminds me of Christmas. If you want to go booze-free, you can simply omit the dark rum in the recipe.
INGREDIENTS
2 oranges
2 cinnamon sticks, plus extra for garnish
2 litres non-alcoholic apple cider
1 whole nutmeg, for grating
125ml dark rum
METHOD
Using a small knife, stab straight through the oranges from top to bottom, twist the knife to widen the holes. Insert a cinnamon stick into each orange. Then, prick 5 or 6 holes around each orange using a skewer or toothpick and stud 5 or 6 cloves into the tiny holes on each one.
Pour the apple cider into a large saucepan and drop the oranges in. Add 10–12 gratings of nutmeg then bring everything to almost boiling point. Reduce the heat to a low simmer and let it infuse for 20 minutes. Remove from the heat, add the rum and serve warm in mugs with cinnamon sticks as stirrers.
