Old Fashioned Stack Cake

Stack cake is best known in the Appalachia Mountains as a wedding cake. Cake ingredients were expensive, so when a couple married, families from the community would provide a layer of cake to form the wedding cake. The couples popularity could be measured by the number of layers.

The bride's family provided the cake filling which was usually apple butter, applesauce, or dried apples.
