The latest research, conducted on Iranian Medical University Shahid Sadoughi, showed that cumin, which has long been used as a medicine and a spice, is a great fighter against excess weight.
The study results revealed that consuming only one teaspoon of cumin a day can help in the process of weight loss. It will also reduce fat and lower cholesterol levels.
The study involved 88 women who were divided into two groups. All women consumed 500 calories less per day within three months. However, one group of women additionally consumed yogurt mixed with a teaspoon of cumin. This group showed better results when it comes to weight loss.
The subjects in this group also had less body fat and lower levels of cholesterol.
Cumin is a spice that is rich in phytosterols, a substance that reduces the absorption of cholesterol in the body. The study’s authors believe that this spice can speed up metabolism.
How to Consume Cumin?
3 grams of cumin powder, the dose that was used in the study, comes to a little less than a teaspoon. If you find the mixture of yogurt and cumin slightly unappetizing, you can try other ways to incorporate the powerful spice into your diet:
Add ground cumin to roasted or sautéed veggies.
Use it when you make hummus or guacamole.
Make a cup of warming beverage by boiling cumin seeds in water and letting them steep for 10 minutes.
Sprinkle it over nuts or other healthy snacks.
Use it to spice your lentil soup.
Add it to plain brown rice to give it an exotic kick (you can also mix in dried apricots and almonds).
