A well-balanced lunchbox is key in keeping your little one’s tummy full for optimum concentration in the classroom and on the sports field. We’ve mapped out how to pack a lunchbox to perfection. Follow these simple tips.

1. Fruity flare

An instant kick of energy Important fibre and vitamins Choose fruits that travel well, e.g. apples, oranges, bananas or naartjies

2. Something to sip

Keeps little ones hydrated on hot days Freeze before packing, to keep the lunchbox cold Skip sugary fruit juice and pack water flavoured with mint and lemon, or cold rooibos, sweetened with honey If you’re packing fruit juice, dilute by half with water

3. Sandwich stars

The ‘filler-upper’ Choose bread that can hold lots of yummy fillings, like Blue Ribbon Classic Brown or White Include a protein, e.g. ham, egg or chicken Top with crunchy veggies Add a spread like mayo, hummus or sandwich spread Wrap tightly in cling film to avoid drying out or sogginess

4. Mighty munch

Something to snack or nibble on Winners: pretzels, nuts, carrot sticks or popcorn Pack in airtight container or bag to keep crunchy

5. Note from mom

Remind your little one how much you love them Encourage them to finish their lunch Guaranteed to embarrass teenagers
