“They demonstrate that God’s law is written within them, for their own consciences either accuse them or tell them they are doing what is right.”
Romans 2:15
• I have a friend who’s a police officer. When I asked her about her most effective interrogation techniques, her answer surprised me: “Most people can’t wait to unburden themselves from the guilt they feel about their crime. I just give them the space to do it. We talk, I sympathize, and they usually start telling the truth.” Have you noticed the sense of “oughtness” that human beings carry within them from birth? It’s a feeling of moral obligation, of duty, bordering on guilt. No doubt it’s the reason we find worship of some variety in every culture throughout history. Suppose we were to ask ourselves, Where does this inner sense of obligation come from? How would you answer? Scriptures say it’s built into creation, because creation has a moral Creator. That built-in law is awesome evidence for the existence of God. The next time you get ready to take up some duty, pause to offer thanks for your sense of duty—an awesome gift.
