“Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to get along happily whether I have much or little. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. . . .” Philippians 4:11–12
• Having been reminded that riches can’t buy happiness, my husband looked up from our precariously balanced checkbook and said, “I’d like to try being rich and unhappy rather than poor and unhappy.” Most of us long for just a little bit more in the bank. But when will we arrive at the place of “enough”? It seems we never get there. The apostle Paul had been both rich and poor—and had learned to be content either way. Not that it was wrong to be rich or particularly noble to be poor. It’s just that, for him, the key was to have his life’s priorities in order and to be spreading the Kingdom values in everything he did. He knew he could do it when times were good. And he knew that in the tough times, God’s love could shine through his life even more brightly. Learn to recognize when you’ve arrived at “enough.”
