“Anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf welcomes me,
and anyone who welcomes me welcomes my Father who sent me.”
Mark 9:37
• Irena Sendler risked her life to save thousands of children from the gas chambers during World War II. Mrs. Sendler was not Jewish, but it broke her heart to see Jews in Poland sent to concentration camps. She couldn’t save everybody, but she smuggled out as many children as possible and placed them with adoptive families. To hide their identities, she wrote their real names and “new” names on slips of paper, put them in a jar, and buried them in her garden. Sadly, most of the children’s families did not survive. The adoptive parents who welcomed them, kept them. Jesus wants us to welcome children on His behalf. We may not be called to rescue them from murder. But children have simple needs, too—they need hugs, friendly smiles, and people who will listen as they practice their reading skills. Are you one of those people, a Welcomer? Welcoming a child, you welcome the Lord.
