“You’re going to wear yourself out. . . .
This job is too heavy a burden for you to handle all by yourself.”
Exodus 18:18
• My night work as a physician’s surgical assistant is quite stressful. It’s not uncommon to be called to the operating room and, during the operation, be paged to an emergency room and at the same time care for a patient in intensive care who’s suddenly become critical. By the end of most shifts, I’d be exhausted and near tears. One night as I was driving to work, I started to pray: “Dear God, please don’t give me more than I can handle tonight.” I repeated those words for several days. As I started to get my feet under me, my prayer became less panicked, and it seemed that God knew exactly what I was able to bear. Since then, I have come to rely on Him throughout the night. The workload remains the same, but my attitude of dependence makes all the difference at the dawn of day. You are always willing to share my burdens.
