“ ‘I assure you,’ he said, ‘this poor widow has given more than all the rest of them. For they have given a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is,
has given everything she has.’ ”
Luke 21:3–4
• As Jesus watched people giving their offerings at the Temple, a poor woman stood out to Him. That’s intriguing to me, because in our culture, it is the rich, the celebrities, the “cool” people who always stand out. But not so with Jesus. Why? Because this poor widow gave all she had to the Lord’s work. That made her a bigger person in His eyes than the smartly dressed, having-it-all-together power people. What does it mean to you, personally, to give generously to God’s work? Consider your charitable contributions. Or, perhaps a better question would be, What blessings do I miss when I fail to give? In numerous Scriptures, God prescribes giving and promises blessing in return. Of course, our motive for giving ought to have nothing to do with what we expect to get back. What matters is not how much is given—but how much remains. When less is left over, isn’t there more contentment?
