“The kingdom of Heaven is like a pearl merchant on the lookout for choice pearls. When he discovered a pearl of great value, he sold everything he owned and bought it!” Matthew 13:45–46
• As a child I loved the felt-board stories, snack time, and songs of Vacation Bible School. And all of us kids worked hard to qualify for a special reward to be given on the final day. Usually our prize was a small toy or a colorful certificate. But one summer we got to choose between two prizes: a New Testament or a can with a real oyster inside. Strange, but true— and most kids wanted the canned oyster, hoping for a valuable pearl inside. After the initial excitement of opening the mysterious cans, those oysters proved a big disappointment. Nobody got rich, and the novelty soon wore off. We all work hard in hopes of obtaining something of value. And we, too, get to choose between two prizes: treasures on Earth or treasure in Heaven. Which, do you think, will bring lasting joy? Invest in God’s kingdom and avoid disappointment.
