“He will shield you with his wings.
He will shelter you with his feathers.”
Psalm 91:4
• A balmy breeze blowing through the open window beckoned me outside. In the backyard, a mother duck summoned her chicks with a low guttural squawk as I approached. Each duck- ling kept peeping, and the mother kept calling until each one came near. She then opened her wings and the ducklings scampered underneath as she settled down and covered them. The peeping stopped. Then, when the mother moved forward again, the chicks followed as if trained in choreographic precision. As I watched this show of caring and being cared for, I smiled. How like the first verses of Psalm 91, where King David describes God’s watchfulness over us. But will I choose to stay close, safe underneath sheltering wings? What, today, might tempt me to venture alone into a dangerous world? Like a protective parent, God invites us to stay close.
