“Try to find out what is pleasing to the Lord.”
Ephesians 5:10
• It sure felt good to “wanna be a God-pleaser.” I’m referring to the 1980's Christian music group Petra, which encouraged its audiences to “be a God-pleaser, not a man-pleaser.” I loved that band! I already knew how to please people—my parents, teachers, pastors, and friends. I’d learned how to read people quite well, and spent much of my energy trying to win their approval. Thankfully, I also experienced God’s unconditional love and acceptance when rejection ultimately came. I often read this passage in Ephesians, especially focusing on Paul’s admonition to avoid foolish talk and empty words. But Paul’s greater challenge guides my study now: to find out what pleases the Lord—even if pleasing God brings the rejection of people. Yes, I wanna be a God-pleaser until the day I die. How about you? Find out what pleases the Lord, and . . . do it! —
