“ Do as they say, ” the LORD replied, “ for it is me they are rejecting, not you.
They don’t want me to be their king any longer. ”
1 Samuel 8:7
• Israel wanted a king—in spite of all that the prophet Samuel had done for Israel—traveling from town to town listening to their problems, settling their differences, and teaching the Law. He deserved their gratitude in his old age. Instead, he got rejection. Samuel and I have something in common—we don’t handle rejection very well. But Samuel, in a sense, walked in God’s shoes for a moment. For God Himself was rejected in this controversy. Yes, Israel wanted a king, even though God had faithfully provided for them in the desert, helped them conquer their enemies, and led them to settle in a fertile land. God deserved their praise and undying devotion. Instead, they wanted someone else to rule over them! Rejection came to Samuel because he represented God. It wasn’t personal, Samuel. Lord, when I feel rejected, show me the bigger picture.
