“Do not covet your neighbor’s house. Do not covet your neighbor’s wife, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else your neighbor owns.”
Exodus 20:17
• Keeping up with the neighbors seems to be a favorite pastime among some ladies in my town. And I’m not immune. I notice when Margie gets a new car, or Phyllis has some furniture delivered, or when Helen just seems to keep her flower garden looking like a country club’s landscaping. In fact, it’s not hard at all to find something to covet when we look to our neighbors. The grass is always greener next door (or at least the car is newer). Sadly, the worst thing about that kind of jealousy is that it dilutes my heart’s praise for all my daily blessings. In other words, when I’m trying to keep up with the Joneses, I need to remember what’s really at stake: my relationship with God. Give thanks for all you have—and for all your neighbor has too.
