CUP OF COMFORT: God of the Derby

• A colonoscopy! I agonized for a week over the routine test. In fact, my heart started racing the Kentucky Derby. I couldn’t sleep. I searched a medical Web site for the symptoms of anxiety and read, “Patient thinks she is having a heart attack.” Bingo! My reaction had no physical cause, but my racing heart refused to listen to my brain. Then I decided to focus on one thing: I belong to a loving God who wants only the best for me. I even memorized 1 John 4:18. Although my anxiety didn’t disappear like magic, thinking about this verse throughout the week calmed my heart’s gallop to a canter. I did just fine with the test and received a good report. Next time, I won’t be so fearful about it (although I’m grateful I don’t have to repeat the procedure for another ten years). His love can soothe storms—and galloping hearts.
