“I can’t help myself, because it is sin inside me that makes me do these evil things.” Romans 7:17
• If you had to list a few of your addictions, what would they be? Counselors tell us that an addiction is any mood-altering substance, experience, or person that we rely on for nurturing, that keeps us from knowing and feeling a deeper, unresolved hunger. Have you realized yet that you can’t fight and defeat it on your own? The apostle Paul, too, clearly struggled against sinful influences in his life. So we need not give in to despair. You see, our addictions can move us into a new, less grasping approach to life. It’s an approach that allows us to extend our hands for help, in faith. A certain church father once said, “God is always trying to give good things to us, but our hands are too full.” Today, consider loosening your grip a bit on things that bring only temporary satisfaction.
