CUP OF COMFORT: A Place Prepared

“There are many rooms in my Father’s home, and I am going to prepare a place for you. If this were not so, I would tell you plainly. When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am.”
John 14:2–3
• All my life I’ve dreaded one question more than any other when meeting new people: “So, where are you from?” Probably not an intimidating inquiry for most people, but for those of us who grew up as “Army brats,” it’s a different story. Do I explain that I lived in eight different places during the first ten years of my life? Do I comment that “hometown” is a foreign word to me? Or do I just name the city of my birth and leave it at that? I struggled with that question for a long, long time. But I also take comfort in the Scripture above, which speaks directly to every human’s longing for complete and lasting settledness. None of us have that . . . yet. But it’s promised. And for those of us who’ve moved more times than we can count, that promise of an everlasting home holds very special meaning and hope. Heaven is waiting for God’s children. —
