“Watch out for people who cause divisions and upset people’s faith by teaching things that are contrary to what you have been taught. Stay away from them. . . .
By smooth talk and glowing words they deceive innocent people.”
Romans 16:17–18
• The young lady at the airport seemed amazingly sincere and intelligent. She was talking about reincarnation and making some powerful points. Was I being drawn in? I walked away and thought, “No, that just isn’t right.” I took out my Bible to prove it to myself. Can you tell a false teacher from a true one? Take a moment to think about that and name some distinguishing characteristics that you’d apply to a false teacher. What kinds of teachings would you look for? What kinds of questionable motives? Christians have always had to stay on the lookout for false teachers. They are not easy to detect. In your prayer time today, ask the Lord to keep you alert to the ever-so-clever “deadening” of what is real, living, and powerful: God’s eternal Word. May we stay alert to smooth talkers with questionable teachings.
