“Get rid of all bitterness, rage, harsh words. . . .
Instead be kind to each other . . . forgiving . . .
just as God through Christ has forgiven us.”
Ephesians 4:31–32
• My friend Carolyn told me about seeing some beautiful paintings of tropical birds. Having spent her childhood in Brazil with missionary parents, Carolyn was delighted with the lovely works of art. She was appalled, however, to meet the artist—a woman who had hoped to be a missionary, but under parental pressure got married instead. “Never in my life have I seen such sadness,” Carolyn said as she described the deep, angry frown lines cutting into the woman’s face. She’d felt wronged and was determined to “wear” the hurt all her life. How tragic! No doubt God calls us away from bitterness because He knows how much it damages us. In fact, isn’t that why God is so saddened by our wrongdoings, seeing how much we’re hurting ourselves? Today, choose what to make of your circumstances.
