“. . . Put into action God’s saving work in your lives, obeying God with deep reverence and fear. For God is working in you, giving you the desire to obey him and the power to do what pleases him.”
Philippians 2:12–13
• It’s about this time of year that I see how well my New Year’s weight loss and exercise plans are going. Either I’ve faithfully counted calories and worked out and can see the results or I haven’t. Just one look in the mirror of me wearing last season’s shorts and T-shirts says it all. Sometimes I need to recommit to the program, especially when I can’t see much improvement. When we’re disturbed about the fact that our faithful service seems to produce few tangible results, we can stop to consider: What long-term effects may come of this that will be a greater blessing than the satisfaction of meeting a short-term quota? After all, many “jobs” may not show immediate results— like child-rearing, teaching a Sunday school class, or working with your husband on a stronger marriage. And a time of boredom or dissatisfaction can be good for us. How else could we develop patience, perseverance, and hopefulness, the true building blocks of Christian faith? Christ is the real Worker behind every Christian work.
