“The Lord continued, ‘Stand here on this rock beside me.’ ”
Exodus 33:21
• For fourteen years I took my first graders to the Cincinnati Zoo. One of the great attractions was the Nocturnal House, home to after-dark creatures. As we entered the shadowy corridor, some little one would always ask, “Teacher, can I stand by you?” Soon a small hand would clasp mine tightly as we moved on. Moses had just come from a mountaintop experience where he received the Ten Commandments. But what a let- down for him when he reached the valley below! There his people frolicked before a golden idol. At that point God began to encourage Moses, giving him a special place to stand. Have you experienced that closeness to God, that solid Rock beneath your feet when all your world seems quite unsteady? I’m simply amazed that the King of the Universe beckons a mere human, “Come and stand by me.” But where else would I rather be? When God calls, run to His side.
