“Then you will sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, making music to the Lord in your hearts.”
Ephesians 5:19
• I can identify only a few birds by their calls. The meadowlark and canyon wren provide melody to my footsteps when I’m out for a walk, so I know those. At home, robins call, “Cheer up,” and mourning doves sigh. I recognize these feathery friends instantly. But one day a bird I’d never heard visited my feeder. It perched on the post singing a brilliant aria. A birder friend identified it as a yellow warbler. I thanked God for the bird’s beautiful song and the lift it gave my heart. When we sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, God draws us closer to Himself and to one another. We are reminded how great God is. We sing about His majesty, love, mercy, forgiveness, peace, power, and comfort. These songs lift our spirits above our earthly concerns and focus them on our Creator— and our fellow creatures who know Him too. Sharing music with others shares God’s greatness with them.
