“ All is meaningless, ” says the Teacher, “ utterly meaningless. ”
Ecclesiastes 12:1
• In Ecclesiastes, the Teacher was making a case for life’s apparent meaninglessness. It’s easy to do: Just focus on one achievement or acquisition at a time, as he did, and try to make it ultimately satisfying. It never works. There is always a letdown. And there are two possible responses to the problem. One is to say, “There is no meaning to be found, anywhere; for I have tried everything.” The other response is, “This desire for meaning, combined with its absence among the things of earth, means it must be found somewhere else.” This seems to be the Teacher’s ultimate conclusion (if you read to the end of his book). So think it over: If you were to rank the good “things” of your life according to how much you look to them for fulfillment, how would your list look? Ultimate meaning in life can come only from above.
