“This is the day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it.”
Psalm 118:24
• I searched for tomatoes in our vegetable garden this morning, planning to make soup. Humming the praise song “God Is So Good,” I stooped down to gather the ruby red globes whose stalks bent low to the ground. I sensed the Lord smiling down on me as I filled my basket and headed toward the house. The late summer sun caressed my neck, and if I had been a little younger, I would have skipped along the path to the kitchen door. I paused as I reached the threshold: Can I rightly be joyful in a world wrestled to its knees by war, disease, and poverty? It’s true that I’m undeserving of God’s blessings, loved by pure grace alone. But surely it would be wrong not to accept His gifts with a glad heart. And surely it would only be right to help salve the ills around me, starting with my neighbor this very day. Be thankful for what you have, and willing to give it away.
