“If your enemies are hungry, give them food to eat.
If they are thirsty, give them water to drink.
You will heap burning coals on their heads, and the LORD will reward you.” Proverbs 25:21–22
• My brand-new neighbor proceeded to vent a profane rage at me for trying to clobber her cat with my broom (well, the ornery thing had bitten and scratched me when I tried to pet him). For sure, stroking a strange cat was not a brilliant idea. But he was, after all, squirming belly-up on my porch. In pain, I wanted to blast back at the hollering woman, but a sudden sense of calm stopped my angry words. I turned away to doctor my wounds, and when morning came, I baked a prune cake. While it was still warm, I took it next door and rang my neighbor’s bell. Her expression said, “You want more, huh?” Until she saw the cake. “Why would you do this for me?” she asked through tears. But wasn’t I doing it for myself as well? When anger simmers, try cooking!
