“Then Bildad the Shuhite replied to Job: ‘How long will you go on like this?
Your words are a blustering wind.’ ”
Job 8:1–2
• “Oh, don’t feel that way!” That’s how Susan’s mother always responded when- ever Susan shared a little bit of emotion. If Susan spoke of anger, sadness, or fear in her life, it was always a similar reply from Mom. Isn’t this the way Job’s “comforters” treated their suffering friend? Clearly Bildad (in the verse above) wanted Job to stop emoting. But it doesn’t work that way. We can’t just turn our feelings on and off. And especially with others we care about, we need to listen to how it is with them, the real story. Then we can respond in ways that draw them out. For example, suppose someone close to you says, “When- ever you get that preachy tone, it makes me angry.” How would you reply? God works within our emotions as well as in our minds.
