“He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less.”
John 3:30
• Have you ever begun a casual conversation with another woman, and after a few minutes you suddenly realized, this lady is important? Perhaps you thought, “I wish I’d known she was an Olympic gold medalist.” Or, “So she was once a state senator!” You quickly felt a bit humbled, right? In our desire to make humility a virtue in our lives, one thing works quite well: getting a clearer picture of who God is, day after day. The truer our picture of Him, the larger He becomes and the smaller we see ourselves. That’s how it was for John the Baptist in our verse above. True humility comes from recognizing who God is. Not that we shrink in self-esteem. Rather, we are humbled by His love for us—and grow in confidence as His Spirit leads us through life. To grow in humility, grow in your appreciation of God’s awesomeness.
