“I cling to your decrees. Lord, don’t let me be put to shame!”
Psalm 119:31
• My Mary was a good student who worked hard for every good grade. Once when she was in fourth grade, she took a math test and quickly jotted all the right answers. The teacher graded her paper just as quickly and, shoving it under Mary’s nose, snarled, “You cheated.” The bell rang, and Mary raced home to tell me what had happened. I was furious. Though she was only nine, I knew Mary’s young character was as beautiful as her innocent, tear-stained face. “Come on, honey,” I said, “let’s go see Mrs. Jones.” My children aren’t perfect, but I was convinced Mary just didn’t have it in her to cheat or lie. I didn’t have to talk very long before Mrs. Jones was convinced too. Years later, Mary laughingly recounted the episode. Then, hugging me, she added quietly, “Mom, even to this day, I’ve tried to live up to your faith in me. Thank you.” God and mothers know their children’s hearts.
