When Is It a Touch?

“I will comfort you as a child is comforted by his mother.”
Isaiah 66:13
• My grandson, Ethan, is cutting teeth, and his mommy has sought out every pain-relieving remedy. We’ve joked that she could write a Teething for Dummies book. She just wants to do everything possible to ease the little guy’s pain. She’ll use icy teething rings, gum-numbing gel, or a distracting bright toy. When those don’t bring relief, all Melanie can do is hold Ethan tightly and gently rock him. God is spirit, so we can’t feel a physical touch from Him. Yet He still comforts us as a mother does. He uses the kind words of our friends, the encouraging biblical stories of others who endured pain and emerged stronger. He even uses the distraction of beautiful displays in nature. But when our hearts are still aching, God may well use our emotions, our imaginations, our sense of presence. In fact, are such forms of comfort so very different from a physical touch after all? Jesus did touch us humans—even physically—and He will soon return.
