“Do not commit adultery.”
Exodus 20:14
• I once saw a cartoon showing Moses just returned from Mount Sinai with the stone Ten Commandments in his hands. He’s reporting his encounter with God on the mountaintop: “It was hard bargaining—we get the milk and honey, but the anti- adultery clause stays in.” But must a life of faith be a series of hard-bargaining rounds? It’s true that some things are clearly wrong and a number of “anti-” clauses must stay put. Yet some people think God sighs with disappointment when His creatures have a little fun. That’s a contrast to my sense of who God is. I’ve been surprised at how much joy flows from the pages of Scripture—pure fun: singing, dancing, shouting, playing, making music. Surely God smiles at our joy. The “don’ts” are all about keeping us from ruining our own party! Can you see God’s commands as an invitation to live a happier life?
