Eyes Turned to Me

“Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me,
to take away my reproach among men.”
Luke 1:25 (KJV)
• I was deeply distressed, wounded by the words of my brother. They were not meant to injure me; his words simply reflected his heartfelt understanding . . . and he was being faithful to what he believed. Nonetheless, it hurt. A week after our painful conversation, as I entered the same building, I noticed an older woman seated at a small table across the large open room. She’d been there then and heard the wounding words; she would know what was going on now, the background, the details. While she would not agree with me, she would know I was aching inside. From across the wide space our eyes met, and she smiled at me, warming the innermost recesses of my heart. It was a smiling, healing look, a gaze that today, years later, brings tears as I remember it. In her smile was the compassion of the Lord. Look at one another with compassion to see the grace of God.
