“Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you your heart’s desires.”
Psalm 37:4
• I recently received one of those chain letters in the mail, the kind that promise tons of money if you only send your name on to the next person in line (along with a five-dollar bill). I know those letters are silly. But sometimes I sit and daydream about five-dollar bills overflowing my inbox. I’d be rich in no time! But phony schemes always hurt someone else in order for you to profit, and that’s no way to satisfy my heart’s desires. A better approach calls me to a more trusting openness to life’s way of gifting me beyond my shabby expectations. It is the releasing of the clamped teeth, the clenched fists, the hunkering down against a world I perceive as demanding and critical. Really, can we ever do this: create a world of satisfaction for ourselves rather than receive our happiness as a gift from God? We are not the best qualified to engineer our own happiness.
