“O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”
1 Corinthians 15:55
• I could hear Mom’s labored breathing as I walked down the hallway to her room in the nursing home. Soon nurses gave her oxygen, and she breathed silently. Mom had been ill for twelve years, and I had watched helplessly as her health deteriorated. She couldn’t remember my name, but she always had a smile for me when I visited. And she seemed to listen intently as I read to her from a little New Testament and Psalms. I touched her arm and prayed for her. Throughout the day, it seemed death was hovering in the corners of Mom’s room. Then a nurse came in to check on her, and as we looked at her face, we realized she wasn’t breathing. While I had sat beside her, holding her hand, Mom’s soul had slipped from her worn-out body and gone home to be with the Savior she loved. For the Christian, death is a homecoming.
