Why Worry?

“Don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries.”
Matthew 6:34
• There’s an old joke about a worrywart old woman who proudly stated, “I’ve worried about things all my life, and not one of them came to pass!” That’s the amazing thing: If we can predict a future that never happens, we can choose to bypass a future that isn’t necessary. Certainly all the fake futures I’ve made up in my mind so far have mostly proven unnecessary. If you’re a worrier like me, you do tend to rehearse the future quite regularly. That’s why most of us need a supernatural kind of peace to fill our days. It’s the kind of peace that can quell my worry habit; it’s got to help me reach the point where I can calmly say, I refuse to get bent out of shape about a future that may never show up. When tempted to worry, use this memory test: What were you worrying about this time last year?
