“When the people heard the thunder and the loud blast of the horn,
and when they saw the lightning and the smoke billowing from the mountain,
they stood at a distance, trembling with fear.”
Exodus 20:18
• I listen to the rain pounding down on the roof on a summer afternoon. Feeling the rumble of thunder deep within my chest, I remember my childhood mind-picture: The angels are bowling. I can imagine the huge pins careening around in the heavens, smashing and bashing against one another with tremendous force. Today I can draw an even more powerful picture of hot and cold air masses clashing as they produce desk-shaking thunder and computer-blowing lightning strikes. And I’m still a bit afraid of that heavenly display of God’s power. I do feel small, overawed, and also I feel blessed. Suppose I, and human creatures like me, were the most powerful and the most intelligent of all beings in the universe? How sad it would be. There is awe in the cosmos because the cosmic Creator is awesome. If it rains today, be sure to sit by the window for a moment.
