“I will be your God throughout your lifetime— until your hair is white with age.
I made you, and I will care for you. I will carry you along and save you.”
Isaiah 46:4
• Sometime after my mother-in-law’s hip surgery, I asked, “How are you doing?” With a somber look, she put aside her walking cane and sat down. “I’m fine now. But the surgery was one of the most difficult journeys of my life. Fear was my companion more times than I care to count. And what pain! Its intensity shocked me.” Nod- ding, I swallowed. She hid her emotions well; I never suspected she’d endured such agony. “I cried a veil of tears so thick, it threatened to block out my Savior’s dear face,” she said. “But I learned something precious too. When we’re alone with our pain, God speaks to us in tones we can only hear if we are set apart and quiet.” She smiled, and I knew that in surviving her pain, she’d let God renew not only the strength of her hip, but the strength of her spirit as well. No matter our age, God will carry us through this veil of tears.
