“I will obey your principles. Please don’t give up on me!”
Psalm 119:8
• As David begins his longest psalm, we find this heartbreaking plea, “Don’t give up on me!” David clearly understands the nature of his relationship with God. In one breath, he confidently determines to obey God’s decrees; in the next, he shows how desperately dependent he is upon God. David, the teen who single-handedly killed a bear, a lion, and a giant, reveals what he fears most—separation from the Lord. “Don’t leave me,” he touchingly cries. That’s what a little child says to a parent when physical or emotional strength fails. “Don’t leave me . . . I won’t make it without you. . . .” David testifies to human weakness, unashamed. But aren’t we supposed to be stoic, independent, self-sufficient, help- yourself-ers in this life? Or does David have it right after all? We can come before the Lord with all our imperfections, fears, and weaknesses.
