“He has broken my strength in mid-course; he has shortened my days.”
Psalm 102:23 (NRSV)
• My son Dan was just goofing around in the living room, running around and turning somersaults when, suddenly, an errant foot struck the coffee table. I watched as several pieces of beloved pottery few through the air before shattering upon impact into jagged shards He felt terrible. I felt worse. I loved those handmade works of art, and now they were broken. The teapot, sugar bowl and creamer had no future use, except as a bittersweet reminder of our own fragility. Have you noticed, though, how God uses broken things? A broken flower blossom gives off sweet perfume. Only broken soil can accept seeds to produce a ripe crop of wheat. And the bread must be broken if it is to sustain our lives. So . . . What about a broken person? What about you? Ask God to take up the broken pieces in your life and make a thing of beauty.
