“There are ‘friends’ who destroy each other,
but a real friend sticks closer than a brother.”
Proverbs 18:24
• I was fighting the blues, and they were winning. I was unemployed, broke, frustrated. God, where are you? My heart ached and I wondered, “How long can this last?” Resuming my online job search, I first fired off a quick e-mail to my girlfriend. I briefly touched on how I felt. Two minutes later my phone rang, and I recognized my dear friend’s voice right away. As I choked back tears, she insisted, “I want you to let it all out; dump it all out on me.” I did, and she listened. When I was out of words, she encouraged me as only a real friend can. While nothing had changed, I was already feeling better. A true friend provides a safe haven for our hurts as well as our joys. If you are hurting today, know that God, too, sees your pain and loves you as the best of all friends. Could you let the Lord be your best friend?
