“The LORD is close to the brokenhearted;
he rescues those who are crushed in spirit.”
Psalm 34:18
• “I have nothing left,” sobbed Diana on the other end of the phone. “I’ve lost my health, my friends, and my dreams. I’m barely hanging on. Why has God allowed this?” I had no answer for her. But I knew what it was like to be bruised and broken. I had battled chronic illness, depression, and marital stress for years. Gently, I offered to Diana the one thing that had helped me—the truth about our life with God. “Some things in life we will never understand,” I began. “We still live in a fallen world and often experience suffering. But in the midst of it, we can turn to God for comfort. When life is painful, He’s there to wrap His arms of love around us.” Before hanging up, we prayed together. I asked God to comfort Diana and reveal His love to her. As we prayed, I sensed her turmoil give way to God’s peace. This is not the best of all possible worlds—not yet.
