“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.
Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately
forgets what he looks like.”
James 1:22–24
• In the years when my husband and I studied in Bible college, we spent many evenings with other students discussing the Scriptures. Did I say “discussing”? I should have said “arguing.” While passionately quoting our school verse, 2 Timothy 2:15, we pointed and exclaimed while fervently splitting hairs over theology and doctrine. If only we had read the verse that comes before: “Command them in God’s name to stop fighting over words.” Fortunately, we resolved most of those discussions in a friendly manner and can still laugh about it all today. How about you? How do you balance your zeal for truth with the call to kind treatment of those who disagree? Your manner of life will often speak louder than your arguments for truth.
