“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God;
and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.”
1 John 4:7
• It was the end of the day just before the start of another annual Christian bookseller’s convention, this one held in New Orleans in July. Since early that morning, I had worked hard alongside Mike, Adam, and Daphne, setting up our publisher’s huge booth and placing books on their designated shelves. Trouble was, the convention hall wouldn’t turn on the air-conditioning until the next day when buyers arrived! As security officers locked the exit doors, we gathered by the loading docks, each one of us drenched in sweat, hungry, and thoroughly exhausted. But then Adam announced great news: he had made reservations for us that evening—at NOLA, Emeril Lagasse’s famous restaurant. Fantastic! Just a few hours later, our previously smelly, grimy work crew shared a rare evening of joy as we ate together, all clean, comfy, and satisfied. As I finished the best steak I’ve ever had, I truly felt the love and mutual appreciation that sparked our hysterical laughter. Yes, fellowship like this must be a foretaste of heaven. No matter what the task, our fellowship—our working together in Christ—is something to savor deeply.
