“The LORD is my shepherd;
I have everything I need. . . . he leads me beside peaceful streams.”
Psalm 23:1–2
• A few years ago, I interviewed for a job back in Orlando, my hometown. If I accepted the position, we would have to sell our newly built dream home in Colorado and move our teen-aged sons to a new high school. But we could live close to our aging parents who needed help, so the decision loomed large in my life. In fact, it all kept me up at night as my mind refused to let go and stop wrestling with my potential future. This wasn’t my idea of walking beside a peaceful stream with the Shepherd! However, I learned something crucial: God will use even our lack of peace to guide us. And in those times, the dreaded “no” will be the means of that peace. Have you also found it so? Lord Byron once said, “When we think we lead, we are most led.” How can that be? For one thing, when we’re so focused on making up our mind about future actions, we lose sight of where those actions ought to be taking us. Pause to consider: Who is leading me, and to what future am I headed?
