“Turn to me and have mercy on me, for I am alone and in deep distress.”
Psalm 25:16
• What a tough transition! I’d been cruising the fast lane as a marketing professional constantly interacting with people, projects, and problems. My days were hectic and stressful. Now I was starting a new venture . . . working by myself at home. After a couple of weeks of silent aloneness, I was ready to jump back into the hustle and bustle of office life, even with all its stress. Hey, I just wanted somebody to talk to. However, it took me a while to admit my deep distress. We all have a tendency to deny loneliness. Once we face it, though, it can work something quite wonderful: It pushes us to reach out. For me, that meant volunteering for several agencies and getting involved in local government in my spare time. Now my alone times feel less like loneliness and more like creative solitude. We can let our need for others move us closer to potential friends.
